The author is a retired pediatrician who graduated in medicine from the University of WA in 1959 after study in Perth and Adelaide. He was a country GP for three years before going to the UK to study pediatrics in London and Sheffield. He returned to Princess Margaret Hospital for Children in 1968 as a pediatrician and Assistant Medical Director. Subsequently, he studied at UNSW for a master's degree in management and returned to Perth as the Medical Director of PMH. In 1995 he went to Wangaratta Hospital in Victoria as Medical Director and later to Traralgon Regional Hospital as Medical Director and pediatrician. Along the way, he was President of the WA branch of the Australian Medical Association and a Federal Councillor and later Treasurer and Chairman of the Federal Assembly of the AMA. He chaired the Medical Services Committee of Enquiry in WA for some years and reviewed hospitals for the Australian Council of Health Services. He now plays golf, bowls, skis, reads, plays the piano, and is quite well occupied.
